Preparing for THE Talk - Getting Started Guide for Younger Kids

I wanted to share something exciting with you all! I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Bryana Kappadakunnel, LMFT, the incredible mom of two and founder of Conscious Mommy, for a Zoom interview. We had such a fantastic conversation about sexual health, and I’m thrilled to share some of the highlights with you.

First off, if you’re not already following Conscious Mommy on Instagram, you need to fix that ASAP! You can find her here. She’s doing amazing work, helping parents navigate the challenges of raising kids in today’s world with grace, empathy, and a lot of wisdom.

During our Zoom interview, Bryana asked me some really thoughtful questions about sexual health—questions that I know a lot of parents out there are struggling with. We talked about everything from how to explain sex to kids in a simple, straightforward way to how important it is to praise your child’s questions (because, let’s be real, those questions can sometimes catch us off guard!). We also covered how to initiate that all-important conversation about sex in a way that feels natural and comfortable for both you and your child.

One of the big questions Bryana asked me was, “What are some reasons that you find parents shy away from having The Talk?” This is something I hear about a lot, and my response was pretty straightforward: a lot of us didn’t have it modeled for us when we were growing up. If our parents struggled with discussing sex, we often find ourselves in the same boat unless we make a conscious effort to break that cycle. It's easy to fall into familiar patterns, even when those patterns are something we know we need to change.

The conversation was so rich, and I knew I had to share it with you all. So, I went ahead and cut some clips from the interview and uploaded them to my Instagram and YouTube channel. I really hope these snippets will be helpful for you, whether you’re gearing up to have “the talk” with your kids or just looking for tips on how to keep the conversation going.
